That sudden craving for hot Sambhar, Idli, Medu Vada, Dosa and an array of Southey Indian food is something we experience every fortnight. The customary Idli and Dosa we eat at home every Sunday is something that cannot be compared to any restaurant/ cafe in town. My mother’s hand has a special magic spell that can only make scrumptious food, that’s consumed in no time. In fact, that’s true for all mothers out there. We headed to Ayyappan Idli Stall in Matunga recently to satisfy our cravings. Situated in the by lanes of Matunga East near O’Hair salon, this place cannot be missed. They have over 80 items on their menu, displayed on a sun board with items starting at 30 INR. The place is always packed, and doesn’t do delivery in cars, which leaves you with the option to stand there and devour your meal.
Value for Money: 4.5/5
Idli: Hot steaming Idli with chutney, Sambhar and gun powder (malagapodi) is a perfect start to your meal here. Quantity and quality is outstanding. You can also customize your order for one Idli and one Medu Vada, which is equally good.
Dosa: with so many varieties of Dosa’s to choose from, we are always confused if we should eat the regulars here or try something different. We decided to go with the different and order the Chinese, Mysore masala and Onion Chili Rava Dosa. The Chinese Dosa is spicy, hot, filled with vegetables and is perfect for those who love their Indian Chinese. Mysore Masala is super delicious with its pav Bhaji like masala and best enjoyed spicy! The Rava Dosa usually takes a little longer so order in advance to avoid disappointment/waiting. But when your order is called out by the Anna (brother in English) there, your face will light up and your taste buds will go on a picnic. Best suggested to go with a large party, so you can try a little bit of everything.
Upma: if you are looking to try something different than the Idli and Dosa, Upma is another option that you can try here. Vegetable Upma which is also piping hot will definitely have you licking the spoon/fingers until the last bite is consumed. Filter Coffee: save the best for the last! Since you are standing and eating, you won’t be able to hold too many things in your hand considering your food served is super hot. Once you are done with eating, order for a filter coffee and wait to get on a tour to Foodland. Perfectly grounded coffee, heated to a certain temperature, mixed with milk is an absolute must have.
Overall, the next time you are looking for a paisa vasool brunch/dinner, Ayyappan Idli stall in Matunga should be your choice. We are sure that everything you order there will be a delight to your taste buds, only leaving you craving for more/planning your next trip there.
